Convert military time to decimal by hand
Military time is the 24-hour clock written without a colon: two digits for the hour (00 to 23) and two for the minutes (00 to 59). Keep the hour, divide the minutes by 60, and add the two.
The last two digits are minutes, not hundredths of an hour. 1745 is 17 hours 45 minutes, which is 17.75 hours, not 17.45.
0000 is midnight at the start of the day (0.00 hours) and 1200 is noon (12.00 hours). 2400 is accepted for the end of the day (24.00 hours); the clock then starts over at 0000. The chart above lists every hour.
A 12-hour time needs one more step: add 12 to PM hours (12 PM stays 12) and read 12 AM as 00. 5:30 PM becomes 1730, which is 17.50 hours. For a time with a colon, like 7:45, use the Time to Decimal Calculator.
Convert decimal hours to military time
Keep the whole hours as the first two digits. Multiply the decimal part by 60 to get the minutes, and write them as the last two digits.
Military time has no seconds, so a value that falls between two minutes is rounded to the nearest minute, and the converter says so. 7.33 hours is 7 hours 19 minutes 48 seconds, which rounds to 0720.
Rounding to two decimal places moves a time by at most 18 seconds, so the nearest minute always comes back: 0720 is 7.33 hours, and 7.33 hours is 0720 again. For decimal hours written as hours and minutes (7 hours 45 minutes), use the Decimal to Time Calculator.
Hours between two military times
Convert both times to decimal hours, then subtract the start from the end. From 0800 to 1730 is 17.50 − 8.00 = 9.50 hours.
When a shift ends after midnight, add 24 to the end time first. From 2200 to 0600 is 6.00 + 24 − 22.00 = 8.00 hours.
The Decimal Hours Calculator does the subtracting for you: put the decimal hours of the end time on a + line and of the start time on a − line, and it keeps full precision until the total. For minutes on their own, the minutes to decimal conversion chart covers every minute from 0 to 60.
What this converter does not do
It converts one time of day at a time. It does not work out the length of a shift, take off breaks, apply rounding or overtime rules, or calculate pay, and it does not handle time zones or daylight saving changes. Nothing here is legal, financial or payroll advice; check the rules that apply to you.
The Calculation Method page explains exactly how values are read, rounded and limited.
How the numbers are made
- Exact integer math. Values are kept as whole numbers of microseconds, never as floating-point numbers.
- Rounded once. Rounding happens only when a result is shown, and a rounded value is marked.
- Private. The calculation runs in your browser. What you type is not uploaded.
- Written down. The rules, limits and reference cases are on the Calculation Method page.
Questions
How do I convert military time to decimal hours?
Keep the hour and divide the minutes by 60. For 1730, the hour is 17 and 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5, so 1730 is 17.50 hours.
What are common military times in decimal hours?
0600 is 6.00, 0630 is 6.50, 0800 is 8.00, 1200 is 12.00, 1530 is 15.50, 1700 is 17.00 and 2215 is 22.25 hours.
Is 1745 military time the same as 17.45?
No. The last two digits are minutes, not hundredths of an hour. 1745 is 17 hours 45 minutes, which is 17.75 hours.
How do I convert decimal hours to military time?
Keep the whole hours as the first two digits, then multiply the decimal part by 60 to get the minutes. 17.75 hours is 17 hours and 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, so 1745. 8.5 hours is 0830.
How do I calculate hours worked between two military times?
Convert both times to decimal hours and subtract the start from the end: 1730 − 0800 = 17.50 − 8.00 = 9.50 hours. If the shift ends after midnight, add 24 to the end time first: from 2200 to 0600 is 6.00 + 24 − 22.00 = 8.00 hours.
What does 2400 mean in military time?
2400 is the end of the day: 24 hours after midnight, and the same moment as 0000 the next day. This converter reads 2400 as 24.00 hours and writes a value of exactly 24 hours as 2400.
How do I convert 5:30 PM to decimal hours?
Write it on the 24-hour clock first: add 12 to PM hours (12 PM stays 12) and read 12 AM as 00. So 5:30 PM is 1730, which is 17.50 hours; 12:30 AM is 0030 (0.50 hours) and 12:30 PM is 1230 (12.50 hours). Type a 12-hour time in the box and the tool offers the 24-hour version to click.
Does it work with seconds?
Yes. Enter six digits (173045) or 17:30:45. At four decimal places that is 17.5125 hours.
Can I convert back and get the same time?
Yes. Rounding to two decimal places moves a time by at most 18 seconds, half of the 36 seconds in 0.01 hour, so converting back to the nearest minute returns the same time. 0720 becomes 7.33, and 7.33 becomes 0720 again.
Is this a timesheet or payroll calculator?
No. It converts one time of day between military time and decimal hours. It does not add up shifts, take off breaks, apply overtime or rounding rules, or work out pay, and it is not legal or payroll advice.
Is what I type uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. What you type is never sent anywhere and never appears in analytics.
Can I print the chart?
Yes. Print chart prints the two chart tables on this page, and Download PDF is a one-page chart with the same hour and minute tables.
