How the conversion works

Keep the whole hours. Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result. If there are seconds, divide them by 3,600.

7:45 = 7 h + 45 min
45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hthe minutes as part of an hour
7 + 0.75 = 7.75 h
With seconds: hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3,600

Decimal places and rounding

7:20 is 7.3333… hours, and the threes never end. Pick how many decimal places to show, from 0 to 6. Two places (7.33) is the usual payroll format, and the more precise value always appears under the result.

Round each row first and the total can drift. Sixty entries of one minute each show as 0.02 hours, and those add up to 1.20 hours, while the true total is 1.00 hour. For a whole column of times, use the Batch Time Converter: it adds the exact values first and rounds once.

Questions

How do I convert 7:45 to decimal hours?

7:45 is 7.75 hours. Divide the minutes by 60 (45 ÷ 60 = 0.75) and add the 7 whole hours.

How do I include seconds?

Fill in the seconds field, or type 7:45:30. Seconds are divided by 3,600, so 7:45:30 is 7.7583 hours at four decimal places.

Can the hours go past 24?

Yes. 37:30 is a duration of 37.5 hours, not a time of day.

Why does 7:20 show 7.33 and not 7.3333?

Because the decimals repeat forever, the result is rounded to the number of places you choose. The default is 2, the usual payroll format. The more precise value is always shown under the result.

Why are minutes limited to 59?

Because 60 minutes make an hour. A value like 1:75 is flagged instead of guessed. For totals such as 75 minutes, use the Minutes to Decimal converter.

How do I type 7:05?

Use two digits for the minutes: 7:05, not 7:5. If you forget, the tool offers a one-click fix.
