What a tenth of an hour is
A tenth of an hour is one part of an hour split into ten equal pieces. Because an hour has 60 minutes, each tenth is 6 minutes. To convert minutes to tenths, divide the minutes by 6; the billing chart then rounds that result according to your terms.
15 minutes is 0.250 hours. Under round-up billing that is 0.3 hours (2.50 tenths before rounding); under nearest-tenth billing it is 0.3 hours.
85 minutes is about 1.417 hours. Under round-up billing that is 1.5 hours (14.17 tenths before rounding); under nearest-tenth billing it is 1.4 hours.
For hundredths of an hour (two decimal places) or a full 0–60 minute decimal table, see the minutes to decimal chart. To convert a single value, use the decimal to time calculator or minutes to decimal converter.
Round up or round to the nearest tenth?
Firms, clients and payers do not all use the same rule. Some billing charts round up to the next tenth so any started six-minute block counts: 1–6 minutes becomes 0.1 hour, 7–12 becomes 0.2, and so on. Others round each duration to the nearest tenth: 0–2 minutes stays 0.0, 3–8 minutes becomes 0.1, 9–14 becomes 0.2.
This page converts your minutes and shows both reference tables. It does not recommend either rule and does not apply wage law, overtime or invoice policy. Check your own billing terms. If you total many rounded entries, read why sums can drift on the rounding decimal hours guide.
To add or subtract hours after you convert, use the decimal hours calculator. To turn clock times like 7:45 into decimal hours for a spreadsheet, try the time to decimal calculator.
Tenths are not hundredths
Decimal hours use two places after the dot for hundredths of an hour: 0.25 hour is 15 minutes. Tenths use one place: 0.1 hour is 6 minutes, not 10. Mixing the two scales is a common billing mistake.
The minutes to decimal conversion chart lists hundredths-style decimals for every minute 0–60. This page is only for the six-minute tenth used in time billing.
Questions
How many minutes is 0.1 hour?
In tenths-of-an-hour billing, 0.1 hour means one tenth of an hour, which is exactly 6 minutes. It is not 10 minutes.
What is 15 minutes in tenths of an hour?
15 minutes is 0.250 hours. Under round-up billing that is 0.3 hours (2.50 tenths before rounding); under nearest-tenth billing it is 0.3 hours.
How do I bill 1 hour 20 minutes in tenths?
Convert the time to total minutes first: 1 hour 20 minutes is 80 minutes. Under round-up billing, 80 minutes is 1.4 hours (14 tenths). Under nearest-tenth billing it is 1.3 hours (13 tenths).
Why do some charts show 1–6 minutes as 0.1 and others 3–8?
Billing charts differ. Some round up to the next tenth so any started six-minute block counts (1–6 minutes → 0.1 hour). Others round each duration to the nearest tenth (0–2 → 0.0, 3–8 → 0.1). This page shows both tables so you can match your terms.
Is 0.1 hour the same as 10 minutes?
No. One tenth of an hour is 6 minutes. Ten minutes is 0.2 hour under both the round-up and the nearest-tenth rule.
Can I print or download the chart?
Yes. Print chart prints the tables on this page. Download PDF is a fixed one-page chart you can save or print offline.
Does this tool pick a billing rule for me?
No. It converts minutes to tenths and shows both common charts. Your contract, client or payer decides whether to round up or to the nearest tenth.
